In an inspiring collaboration, Sunu Reew Medical Mission and the Silicon Valley African Film Festival (SVAFF) are joining forces to merge healthcare and cultural storytelling in The Gambia. This groundbreaking partnership will present a ‘Celebration of the Arts and Culture’ event alongside Sunu Reew’s third medical mission, highlighting how the power of storytelling and cultural exchange can transform healthcare outcomes.
Founded by Ms. Victoria Lissong Richards-Ohwotu in 2021, Sunu Reew seeks to address critical health challenges in The Gambia, inspired by her personal experience with her mother’s undiagnosed dementia. This year’s mission includes hospital rounds, university lectures, a community health fair, and a Valentine’s Day dinner, emphasizing harmony and empathy. The collaboration with SVAFF, founded by Chike Nwoffiah, aligns seamlessly with the festival’s mission to celebrate African stories through “Africa through African lenses.”
The event will honor cultural icons, including artist Njogu Touray, Jola scholar Daniel Laemouahuma Jatta, and legendary filmmaker Souleymane Cissé. By blending health initiatives with storytelling and recognition of cultural achievements, this partnership demonstrates the profound intersection of art, culture, and healing.
