THE SILICON VALLEY AFRICAN FILM FESTIVAL (SVAFF):

The Silicon Valley African Film Festival (SVAFF) was founded to confront the sad reality that after over 50 years of postcolonial rule in Africa, most of Africa’s narrative is still presented to the world through a foreign lens with narratives that create blurred interpretations and perceptions of Africa and Africans. Aptly themed “Africa through the African lens” the annual film festival celebrates the vast richness of the African Continent through the lenses of its seasoned and emerging filmmakers and crucially, provides audiences with exquisite lenses to the real Africa.

Celebrating its 14th edition in 2023, SVAFF has become a highly respected destination event that attracts an avid international following of distinguished transcontinental visitors, entrepreneurs, tech executives, cinema buffs, academics, civic officials and community supporters. The festival will present 100 films by seasoned and emerging filmmakers from 35 countries. Scheduled highlights include a Red Carpet/VIP reception, resplendent opening ceremony with celebrity guest appearances and a flag parade featuring flags of the countries in the festival, live performances, film screenings, post-screening dialogues with filmmakers in attendance, African market, fashion show, awards, etc. Principal funding is provided by the California Arts Council, County of Santa Clara, City of San Jose Office of Cultural Affairs, Silicon Valley Creates and Silicon Valley Community Foundation.
